Richard Joyce
Richard Joyce
Richard Joyce's principal area of research is metaethics. He is particularly interested in the contribution that the empirical sciences might make to this field, though he is by no means averse to working from his armchair. He also works in moral psychology, philosophy of biology, the philosophy of the emotions, and moral philosophy broadly construed. His other interests range over philosophy of language, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and aesthetics.

Richard received his PhD from Princeton University in 1998 (under the supervision of Gil Harman and Gideon Rosen), and then from 1997 to 2001 he was a lecturer at the University of Sheffield, UK. He joined the RSSS Philosophy Program as a Research Fellow in 2002. In 2006 he was awarded an International Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Sydney. For 2007 and 2008 he will continue to split his time 50/50 between Sydney and Canberra.

Richard is presently team leader of an ARC Discovery Project, along with Kim Sterelny (ANU) and Fiona Cowie (Caltech): "The Evolution of the Social Brain: How Emotions and Moral Judgement Interact in the Generation of Cooperative Behaviour."
