It is recommended that you use the university-wide @anu service rather than the local @coombs service.Personal pagesThere are two ways for students and faculty members to have a personal web page. You can ask the current webmaster to maintain a simple page for you. Alternatively, you can set up your own web account on the Coombs server. You already have an account like this if you have an @coombs email address. If your email is xyz@coombs.anu.edu.au, your personal web site will be accessible as http://philrsss.anu.edu.au/~xyz (don't forget the "~"). If you do not already have an account on the Coombs server, request one from Bryan Shanahan (above).Once you have a username and password on the Coombs server, you can access the files on your account using a FTP program such as WS_FTP (on Windows) or Fetch (on the Mac). On Windows, Internet Explorer supports FTP transfers (see below). To make a website, you must upload HTML (.htm or .html) and image (.jpg, .gif) files to the public_html directory under your "home directory" on the Coombs server. How to create the relevant files is explained below. You must first connect to the server using the address ftp.coombs.anu.edu.au and your username and password. Then you can upload to the public_html directory that should be visible as you log on. If a public_html directory is not available, you will have to ask Bryan to make one for you and set up the permissions appropriately (even if you can create the directory with your FTP program, permissions that you cannot change yourself might have to be changed). The simplest way to create the HTML files is using MS Word. Word allows you to insert links and images in your document (insert menu). Create your home page as if it were a Word document for print (but using links as required), then choose "save as html" when saving. If you include pictures in a document called "mypage.html", they will be saved under a directory mypages_files or mypages_images. You must upload both the page and the directory to public_html. MS Word is easy to use but does not always give you the results you expect. The more professional way to make a web site is to use an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, which is available for only $88 from RSSS. You normally need to know a little bit of HTML language to use such an editor. To use Internet Explorer as an FTP program on Windows, give it an address like the following: ftp://xyz@ftp.coombs.anu.edu.au where "xyz" is your username. You will be prompted for your password. After that you will have access to your files on the server almost as if they were local files. Your site should consist of at least one page called "index.html".
