"Rejecting a Layered World"
Essentialists and other nonreductionists who distinguish higher-order and lower-order objects (such as cells and their microphysical constituents) have difficulty with causal overdetermination. I argue that essentialists can distinguish between objects such as cells and their constituents without endorsing higher and lower orders of objects and that once the causal structure of the cases is better understood there is no overdetermination.

*Note* Denis Robinson's talk has been withdrawn as we figured four talks was too much for one day. Keep your eyes open however for a rescheduled performance at a later date.
