Metaphysics Day 2
Seminar Room B, Coombs Building, ANU
October 30, 2003

Thursday 30 October is Metaphysics Day 2. Our speakers will be Frank Jackson (RSSS), L. A. Paul (University of Arizona and RSSS), and Daniel Stoljar (RSSS). Each speaker will give a presentation on a topic in metaphysics, after which there will be opportunity for discussion.

Program:

10:30-11:00 Coffee available in the Coombs tearoom
11:00-12:30 L. A. Paul (Arizona, RSSS)
"Rejecting a Layered World"

Abstract:
Essentialists and other nonreductionists who distinguish higher-order and lower-order objects (such as cells and their microphysical constituents) have difficulty with causal overdetermination. I argue that essentialists can distinguish between objects such as cells and their constituents without endorsing higher and lower orders of objects and that once the causal structure of the cases is better understood there is no overdetermination.
12:30-2:00 Lunch
2:00-3:30 Daniel Stoljar (RSSS)
"Problems with Primitivism"
3:30-4:00 Afternoon Tea
4:00-5:30 Frank Jackson (RSSS)
"Why We Should Be A Priori Physicalists"

!!All Welcome!!

*Note* Denis Robinson's talk has been withdrawn as we figured four talks was too much for one day. Keep your eyes open however for a rescheduled performance at a later date.
