The Philosophy Program, RSSS, is a research-oriented department in the Research School of Social Sciences of the Australian National University. ANU is located in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. The Philosophy Program is in the Coombs Building on the ANU campus.

If you are interested more generally in philosophy at ANU, you should also check out the Social and Political Theory Program at RSSS, the Faculty of Arts' Philosophy Program, and the Charles Sturt branch of the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, which is also located on the ANU campus. There are also philosophers in the ANU's Automated Reasoning Group.

The Australian National University itself divides into two parts. In The Faculties the focus is on both research, and undergraduate and graduate teaching. In the Institute of Advanced Studies the focus is on research and graduate teaching. The Philosophy Program at the Research School of Social Sciences is part of the Institute of Advanced Studies. As such it is primarily a research department.

The Philosophy Program in The Faculties, the Social and Political Theory Program at RSSS, and the Philosophy Program at RSSS together convene ANU's Graduate Program in Philosophy. This is the body to whom you should apply if you wish to study for the PhD in philosophy at RSSS. If you click here you will find a list of the current PhD students in the Philosophy Program at RSSS, their fields of interest, and links to their individual homepages.

If you click here you will find a list of the current academic staff in the Philosophy Program at RSSS. This list includes links to individual homepages that contain biographical information, research interests and lists of publications. The best way to find out about the Program's research output is by following these links. Lists of those who have worked in the Program in the past, and a short history of the Program, which includes profiles of selected past members of staff, are also available.

The Program regularly hosts a number of Visiting Fellows and Visiting PhD students from other universities. From time to time it also hosts a number of Summer Scholars: undergraduates from elsewhere in Australasia who come to RSSS to undertake a research project under the supervision of one of the Philosophy Program's staff.

The Philosophy Program runs a research seminar series. Graduate students in the Program run the ANU Philosophy Society, which sponsors its own seminar series.

For more information about philosophy in Australasia and worldwide, links to other philosophy pages and an extensive range of philosophy texts, and (most importantly) information about how to join the Aphil emailing list, you should visit the Program sponsored Aphil Homepage. Aphil is the main way in which Australasian philosophers are able to communicate with each other electronically.

ANU is located in the centre of Canberra, which is three hours drive south-west of Sydney, a two hour drive from the south coast of New South Wales, a three hour drive from the ski fields of the Snowy Mountain Ranges, and an eight hour drive north-east from Melbourne. The ANU enjoys unusual cultural resources by virtue of being located in the nation's capital. Canberra is the home of the National Gallery, the National Library, the National Museum, the National Science and Technology Centre, the National Film and Sound Archive and the Australian Institute of Sport. There are also many fine concert halls, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants. Canberra is a very popular tourist destination.
